How to Add a Pocket Between Straps on a Bag

Pockets are a super fun aspect of bag making but what happens when the pattern you're using doesn't call for the pocket you love.  Well, you add your own and I'm here to show you how.

Let's learn how to add a pocket between straps on a bag!

Here's a video tutorial.  There's also a written tutorial below.

Here's what you'll need:

  • Outer Panels with strap placement marked clearly
  • Pocket fabric
  • Straps

1. Determine the dimensions of your pocket based on the placement markings on the Outer Panel. Measure from the center of one strap marking to the center of the other as shown below:

2. Place the pocket pieces right sides together and clip/pin.  Using a 1/4" seam allowance, sew across the top raw edges of the pocket.

3.  Turn right side out and press. Now topstitch across the sewn seam from step 2.

4.  Place the pocket between the strap markings and baste suing a 1/8" seam allowance down the sides and bottom of the pocket.

You can now add your straps as the tutorial states!
