DIY Fabric Handles, Adjustable Shoulder Strap, & Strap Connectors

It's not often that I have all the supplies that I need for a bag.  Most of the time I have ZERO webbing and I have to make my own.  If you're anything like me you need to make your own handles, adjustable shoulder straps, or strap connectors.

I'm here to help! Here's the video I produced to show you how it's done.  Be sure to to check out all the details and the written tutorial below.

Let's start with handles:

Making these is super easy. Here's what you need:

  • Determine how long you handles need to be. This will vary based on the project and your preferences.
  • Determine how wide you need them to be. Refer to the table below
 Finish width Cut width
3/4" 3"
1" 4"
1 1/4" 5"
1 1/2" 6"
2" 8"

Next up we have the adjustable shoulder strap:

Here's what you need:

  • Two swivel clips the size of your finished width
  • One adjustable strap buckle the size of your finished width
  • For the best adjustable strap I like to cut a 60" long piece.  It can be shorter based on you fabric and you needs.
  • Determine how wide you need them to be. Refer to the table below
 Finish width Cut width
3/4" 3"
1" 4"
1 1/4" 5"
1 1/2" 6"
2" 8"

    Last, it's the Strap Connectors

    Here's what you need:

    • Two D-rings the size of your FINISHED width.
    • Cut two: 3-4" x cut width.  Refer to the table below
     Finish width Cut width
    3/4" 3"
    1" 4"
    1 1/4" 5"
    1 1/2" 6"
    2" 8"

The next time you're out of webbing check out this blog post to make your own.

    Happy Making!
